What is Mock Trial?

Did Jesse Duran, an 11 year old, intentionally shoot his neighbor?  Or did shy Sydney Park consent to a game of Russian roulette?  These are the key facts in a legal case that Fairleigh Dickinson’s Mock Trial team will argue at the 2015 regional competition at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

Each year, the FDU Mock Trial team prepares a case provided by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA), a national organization which is responsible for collegiate competitions.  AMTA provides materials including a mock complaint and witness statements.  The students prepare the rest – the opening statements, direct and cross examinations, closing arguments and the overall trial strategy.  In teams of 6 – 10, students play the roles of witnesses and attorneys in heated competitions against other universities.

Why Join Mock Trial?

Are you interested in law school?  Improving your public speaking and communication skills?  Learning more about the trial process?  The Mock Trial team can help in all of these areas and more.  Students improve their public speaking and critical thinking skills, gaining legal knowledge and trial skills during the process.  Through weekly meetings, students form a unified group ready to compete against other prestigious schools.
